Memories...![]()
We look forward to hearing from you all; having churned up all
sorts of memories of Mission Bay High. Remember
Dunaway's Drug Store - Garnet and Cass … 35 cents for a Hot
Fudge Sundae and the comic book rack by the window (read for
free). Roasting hot-dog on fire rings, beach parties,
volleyball, surfboards, walking the boardwalk in Mission
Beach, ridding the Big Dipper, cruising Oscars--the Frosty
Shop….
Please share with us your stories and pictures. Also,
send us that picture of your best friends way back when…
and, show us who you are now too!
In My Life ...
there
are places I'll remember All my life though some have changed
Some forever not for better Some have gone and some remain
All these places have their moments With lovers and friends I still can recall
Some are dead and some are living In my life I've loved them all
But of all these friends and lovers There is no one compares with you
And these memories lose their meaning When I think of love as something new
Though I know I'll never lose affection For people and things that went before
I know I'll often stop and think about them In my life I love you more
Though I know I'll never lose affection For people and things that went before
I know I'll often stop and think about them In my life I love you more
In my life I love you more...

After moving to Oregon in the '80s, I had a job, which would
often take
me back to San Diego, or we would travel there to visit family
and friends. When I would get to the airport, I would look
around to see if there was somebody I would recognize from my
high school days - I never did. I would take a walk down
Garnet in Pacific Beach, Crystal Pier, or around the La Jolla
Cove, again, I never saw anybody from my past. Where did they
all go?
Well, the mystery has been solved. After looking at the
reunion pictures, some of you looked vaguely familiar, but I
realized that I wouldn't have recognized anyone without a
nametag, nor would they have recognized me. We've all changed
a little bit.
A favorite high school teacher? I beat my head against
the wall with that question, because I couldn't remember any
favorites, but one does stick out in my memory. I took
chemistry from Mr. Locke in my junior year. I was near the
peak of my 'smart-ass' stage at that time, and Mr. Locke had
an odd nervous laugh. I learned how to mimic that laugh and
would often do it in class just when he would finish laughing.
Of course he would hear me and shoot daggers in my direction.
I think I got a 'D' in that course, and deserved less.
About six years went by; I had graduated from Mission Bay High
School and served almost 5 years in the military. It was
time to start college. I had decided to become a Biology
major. . Biology majors have to take several chemistry
courses, and as I walked into my first class and looked up at
the podium, whom do you think I saw. He was now Professor
Locke. After a couple of lectures, with trepidation, I walked
up to him and asked, "Do you remember me?" "Of course,
Don," he replied with a sly smile. I expressed regret for how
I had acted at Mission Bay, and he seemed to accept my
apology. And, I aced that course

Footnote: You asked where we live in Oregon -- just
outside of Salem. In the woods, but still only about 15
minutes from a Nordstrums.

Old
friends: Speaking of old friends...Sometime back I was reminiscing with
Robert (Bob) Olivas.
I was telling Bob that I had heard through the grapevine that
he, Bill Gould, Jimmy Cox, Kenny Cox had created the following Cheer before a
Point Loma football game: Catch that ball, Run for the Goal, Push Pt. Loma in
that Hole"
Bob Later told me the whole story: "We
were hanging around Gould's back yard and just started brain storming (although
we did not know that was what we were doing at the time) and came up with the
cheer before a Pt. Loma football game. Don't recall if we won the game but
we had fun at the pep rally when we introduced the cheer and unveiled our "secret
sound machine" (SSM). You see we were all amateur grease monkeys
and thought if we made a box, installed a bunch of car horns from Rose Canyon
Wrecking yard and a car battery it would make a wonderfully loud and annoying
noise we could direct at the opposing team when they started to cheer. We
unveiled the SSM at a pep rally and it was the biggest flop ever. The
battery went dead, it weighed a ton and made the most pitiful groan that could
barely be heard if you were standing right next to the thing.
Oh well, it was fun making the SSM anyway...

What a great 45th reunion!
My thanks go to all of you ladies (and gents) who worked very
hard to bring
it all together.
I had a lovely time attending with my daughter. To my
surprise I was given
the gift of meeting up again with one of my closest
girlfriends. Penny (Fenton) Wallace
shares a bit of my personal history -- so it was wonderful
meeting with her
again after all these years. We are making plans to get
together in the near
future.
That's all for now. Hope to see you at the next reunion
in five years.
Best wishes.
